BBC outlines plan for production subsidiary

Director general Tony Hall has confirmed the BBC will go ahead with its plan to establish a new BBC Studios division that will contain the drama, comedy, entertainment and factual programme-making departments. The remaining departments – children’s, sport and current affairs – will remain within the BBC and be managed by BBC North and BBC News, respectively. It is expected that setting up the new division will take six to 12 months. As part of the plan, subject to government agreement, BBC Studios will subsequently be transferred out of the publicly-funded part of the BBC and will operate at arm’s length as a separate subsidiary of the BBC group.
